The Issue: AI-Planned Itineraries Look Packed but Feel Exhausting

When you ask AI to plan an itinerary, it defaults to a "fully packed" version: 4 spots plus a night market per day. This works well for those with great stamina but can wear out elders and kids on day one.

The problem isn’t that AI can’t plan; it’s that it doesn’t know "who is actually traveling." Today’s three conditions provide the key details all at once.

Test: Two Ways of Asking the Same Question

Approach A (No conditions): "Plan a 3-day 2-night Taipei itinerary for me."

The AI suggests: Day 1: National Palace Museum→Shilin Official Residence→Tamsui Old Street→Fisherman’s Wharf sunset→Shilin Night Market; Day 2: Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall→Yongkang Street→Taipei 101→Elephant Mountain Trail→Raohe Night Market; Day 3: Yangmingshan→Beitou Hot Springs→Home. 9 spots plus 2 night markets, estimating over 20,000 steps per day.

Approach B (With 3 conditions): "Plan a 3-day 2-night Taipei trip, budget $15,000 (for two), traveling with 65-year-old parents, slow pace, little uphill walking, lots of rest."

The AI suggests: Day 1: National Palace Museum (morning) → lunch break at hotel → leisurely walk at Tamsui Old Street (flat terrain) → dinner in the city; Day 2: Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall → lunch at Yongkang Street → tea at Daan Forest Park → only Ningxia Night Market (small, easy to walk); Day 3: Beitou Hot Springs (relaxing soak) → home. Only 2-3 spots per day, afternoons left free for rest, restaurants noted for "elevator" and "ample seating."

Same AI, but the only difference is whether you provide conditions first. Approach B’s itinerary is manageable for elderly parents.

The Method: Provide 3 Conditions at Once

Next time you ask AI to plan a trip, start by stating these three:

  1. Days: Number of days and nights, and which days (crowds differ greatly on holidays).
  2. Budget: Total budget and number of people sharing it, so AI knows whether to pick affordable options or go all out.
  3. Travel Companions: Elders, kids, couples, solo—each has completely different stamina and pace, this is the most crucial.

Example phrasing: "Plan a ___ 3-day 2-night itinerary, budget ___ (___ people), traveling with ___, preference for ___." Preferences can include: less uphill walking, foodie, sea views, family-friendly.

3 Additional Tips

  • Specify transportation: Driving and using public transit lead to very different itineraries. Without mention, AI assumes public transit.
  • Ask for a relaxed pace: Add "no more than 3 spots per day, with 2 hours of rest in the afternoon" to make it easier than manually removing stops later.
  • Verify business info yourself: AI’s restaurant recommendations might be outdated or closed. Double-check on Google Maps before you go.
